7 Ways To Stay Motivated

Motivation – oh the magic words of magnificence.

The mysterious potion which enables women around the world to achieve washboard abs and a wardrobe to die for.

Or maybe not?!

This week I’ll walk you through 7 ways to hack motivation in your life, check out the video below for 7 great tips in 4 minutes.

Why do you need to hack motivation?

Well first I’ll dig into the science of it. Motivation is essentially caused by the happy chemical Dopamine travelling down a path through the brain into the frontal lobe of the neo-cortex (from the back to the front to the part where the decisions are made).

Dopamine causes a desire to take action which is awesome – when it’s a good action.

Here in lies the problem.

If Dopamine travels down the wrong path it has the exact opposite effect, the desire to run away or perhaps worse, apathy.

So if you are finding that your motivation is waning and things are getting a little tougher than you anticipated it’s time to create the motivation rather than relying on Dopamine finding the right pathway in your brain. Let’s look at a couple of simple strategies.

1) Connect To Something Bigger

Channelling the magnificent Simon Senik here, connect to your why. It is proven over and over again that people are more productive and motivated when they have a REASON to achieve. Think about the impact having a PT waiting for you on a cold morning has, or even worse a whole team!

Similarly people who have a reason to be healthy, happy, wealthy or have magnificent relationships normally manage to succeed over and over again.

When we can truly connect both physically and emotionally to a goal we succeed.

2) Be Kinder To Yourself

Hands up if you are guilty of this one! We have an incredible talent, especially as women, to beat ourselves up like we are paid for it. Now there are reasons for this neurotically, however I’ve science you out already in this blog post… so we’ll deal with that another time.

Very few people respond to being told they aren’t good enough constantly. It releases a whole lot of negative chemicals into the brain and crush any motivation you could possibly manufacture. One of my favourite mantra’s is ‘progress not perfection’, adopt it and see how you go!

3) Create A Successful Habit

We are creatures of habit, many of then good habits many of them poor habits! When all is said and done creating habits that serve your goals and lifestyle will allow you to achieve what you want even when the motivation has waned.

If you have a habit of waking up early and exercising even when you feel unmotivated you will just get up and get it done. If you have a habit of being grateful for your life, even if you don’t feel motivated to write them down you will take the time.

It’s not about always wanting to do something and it’s definitely not always about succeeding the first time, but it is about how often you get up after being slapped and most of all your commitment.

Wanting something isn’t enough. Commitment is.
